I have put together a collective from our broad choices of artist and musicians. I have chosen the rhythm section of Booker T. and The M.G.’s led by Booker T. Jones, to begin with. I just love the way they create new material that is smooth an fun to listen to. They also do some great covers with no words to them but today we are going to have the crew go in a new direction with a front man on the stage, while still keeping that genuine style intact. With Steve Cropper on guitar, Al Jackson on drums, Donald “Duck” Dunn who replaced Lewis Steinberg on bass, and lastly Booker T. Jones smooth grooving on the organ. The style would stay true to the bluesy jazz like bounce they provide, I will add in the hip hop rhythm and drop the bass drum deep into this classic sound. In my band I will keep the original band and add Nas and Common in the front of this iconic group. We will create a sound that honors the style and creativity of The Roots because none other has come close to what they brought to the table. I don’t think I can offer too much to the technical side of this outfit, I can give the creative side the twist it needs to be something special and this is why I like the combination of two great poets and an awesome band collective. I would smooth out the riffs that the band is used to pushing out and put a more fluent 4/4 bounce to the measures, Booker T. on organ would be hooked to a synth to give us more play with experimental sounds. Nas can tell a good story (I Gave You Power) so we would really make some slower suspenseful chords come out of the guitar and bass sections and drums would follow in suit. Common is also one who can captivate you with great story rhymes (Testify) so his input would come into play here as well. The name of this new combination of artist and musicians would be dubbed appropriately “The Collective” for the fact that this is a fairly unexpected collaboration. I am a big fan of online promotion, however I have gained an understanding of all of the records on vinyl with sleeves that are only a painting of depictions from the artist hearing the music on the records. This will be the type artwork that we would put on our projects. I would use the online avenue to push the music across the globe and create videos the can only be seen online with no subscription to the site. Two months would be spent on promotions before taking the act on a radio tour and perform shows as we pass through each syndication. I would only use a major company to support this venture as a silent partner on a temporary basis.
